Alabama's civil rights history is preserved seriously in Birmingham and Montgomery, from the 16th Street Baptist Church to the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma.
Montgomery, the capital, has built out a museum and memorial dedicated to that history in recent years. Mobile, on the Gulf Coast, claims to have held the first Mardi Gras celebration in the country, predating New Orleans. Barbecue and biscuits are taken equally seriously across the state.
It rewards visitors who come specifically for the history rather than just passing through.
