Boston fits an unusual amount of American history into a city you can mostly walk. The Freedom Trail links sixteen historic sites with a painted red line on the sidewalk, ending at the USS Constitution.
Outside the history, it's a serious sports town and a serious food town, especially if seafood is involved.
