Nebraska

Nebraska is largely open plains, and the Oregon Trail once ran directly through it, past landmarks like Chimney Rock that pioneers used to track their progress.

Omaha, the largest city, has one of the best zoos in the country and a rebuilt Old Market district full of restaurants in converted warehouses. Lincoln, the capital, revolves around the University of Nebraska and its football culture.

It's a state better suited to a road trip than a single-city visit.
