Oregon's coastline is public along its entire length by law, which means beach access here is rarely blocked by private development the way it is in other states.

Portland has built one of the best food cart and craft brewery scenes in the country. The Columbia River Gorge, east of the city, has waterfalls dropping directly beside the highway. Crater Lake, in the south, is the deepest lake in the country and one of the clearest.

Rain is a real factor for much of the year outside summer.
