South Carolina's coast splits between Charleston's historic downtown and Myrtle Beach's family-focused boardwalk further north.

Charleston's cobblestone streets and pastel row houses along the Battery are some of the best-preserved colonial architecture in the country, paired with a Lowcountry food scene built on shrimp, grits, and rice. Columbia, the capital, sits inland and serves as home to the University of South Carolina.

Plantation history here is complicated and is presented with varying degrees of honesty depending on the site.
