McHenry Mansion

The McHenry Mansion is a Victorian Italianate house museum in downtown Modesto, built in 1883 for Robert McHenry, a local rancher and banker who used his agricultural fortune to construct one of the finest homes in the Central Valley. Designed and built by Stockton contractor Jeremiah Robinson, the mansion was occupied by three generations of the McHenry family before eventually passing out of family hands; it was restored by the City of Modesto in two phases (1977–1983 and 2011–2013) and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Today the mansion is owned and operated by the City of Modesto with support from the nonprofit McHenry Mansion Foundation, established in 1983. Docent-led tours depart from a visitors center two doors down and walk guests through rooms furnished with period-appropriate Victorian antiques reflecting the home's occupancy between 1883 and 1906.

What makes the mansion distinct is that it is one of the last surviving grand residences from Modesto's earliest boom years, and it remains an active civic space: the mansion and its garden are frequently rented out for weddings, receptions, and community events, blending preservation with ongoing public use rather than functioning purely as a static museum.
