McHenry Museum

The McHenry Museum occupies Modesto's original Carnegie library building on I Street and now serves as the city's history museum, operated by the City of Modesto's Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department. Its galleries trace the story of Stanislaus County from Native American life through Gold Rush-era settlement, agricultural development, and 20th-century daily life, using recreated period rooms, photographs, and artifacts donated by local families.

Because the museum shares its origins with the neighboring McHenry Mansion (both named for the same pioneering family), the two sites are often visited together as a single downtown history stop. Admission is free, supported by donations, which keeps it an accessible option for budget travelers and school groups alike.

The museum stands out for its hyper-local focus: rather than a general history collection, its exhibits are built specifically around Modesto and the surrounding Central Valley, including agricultural equipment and mercantile displays that reflect the region's identity as a farming hub.
