George J. Hatfield State Recreation Area

A state recreation area on the San Joaquin River near Newman and Hilmar, roughly 30 minutes from Patterson, with river access for fishing and swimming and a shaded group campground. It's a smaller, quieter alternative to the bigger reservoirs in the region, genuinely low-key rather than a major regional draw, which is part of its appeal for a picnic or an afternoon by the water without much of a crowd. The entrance sits just past the San Joaquin River bridge east of Newman on County Road J-18.
