Modesto sits along the Tuolumne River, and the city has spent recent decades turning stretches of that riverfront into public parkland rather than leaving it undeveloped. Between the river parks and a brand-new state park nearby, there’s more green space here than the city’s farmland reputation suggests.
Most of what’s below is free or low-cost, and works well as a morning activity before the Central Valley heat sets in during summer.

Graceada Park
Modesto’s oldest city park, dating to 1907, offers shaded, mature trees, a splash pad, and an outdoor amphitheater that hosts a free summer concert series.
Tuolumne River Regional Park
This developing riverside park system spans more than 500 acres and nearly seven miles of Tuolumne River frontage through Modesto, with trails and habitat restoration areas alongside recreational space.
Dos Rios State Park
California’s newest state park sits about eight miles west of Modesto at the confluence of the Tuolumne and San Joaquin rivers, with hiking trails, picnic areas, and strong birdwatching opportunities across 1,600 acres of restored floodplain.
Modesto Arch
While it’s a landmark rather than a natural space, this 1912 outdoor arch spanning I Street is worth pairing with a walk through downtown on your way to or from the river parks.
Mornings and early evenings are the better windows for outdoor time here, since Central Valley summers run hot through much of the day.
Dos Rios currently operates Friday through Sunday only, so plan that stop around a weekend if it’s on your list, and pair it with Tuolumne River Regional Park if you want a fuller day along the water.
