Caswell Memorial State Park

A California State Park southwest of Ripon, about a 30-minute drive from Patterson, protecting one of the last stands of old-growth valley oak riparian forest left along the Stanislaus River. The short, flat Caswell Loop Trail winds through the oak grove and along the riverbank, genuinely different scenery from anything in the immediate Patterson area, and the park allows swimming and fishing directly in the river during warmer months. It's a real day-use destination for anyone who wants river shade and old trees rather than another Central Valley farm town stop, and it stays noticeably cooler than Patterson itself in summer thanks to the tree cover.
