Riverbank
Riverbank sits on the Stanislaus River in Stanislaus County, and started life as a ferry crossing before the railroad arrived and turned it into a proper town. The old Santa Fe Railroad Depot still stands and now houses the local history museum.
A 2009 downtown remodel added a plaza with a mural and a statue honoring the town's cable ferry operators, a nod to how the place actually got its start. Outside downtown, the Stanislaus River itself is the main draw, with a trail for walking and biking and real access for fishing and kayaking.
Riverbank sits close enough to Modesto to make a convenient day trip or overnight base out of the bigger city, rather than a place most people plan a standalone visit around.
